Long Distance Relationship Advice
You’ve probably heard advice on having long distance
relationships before and most likely it was to forget it. True, it isn’t easy to be far apart and still keep
your relationship strong. However, under the right circumstances, you can. Even married couples have to be
separated sometimes if one of the couple has to work out of town for extended periods or is in the military.
Some couples spend many months apart without seeing each other.

New relationships are more likely to fail than those that have
more time invested in them. If you haven’t gotten to that point where you know the person well, then the
distance can bring out feelings that might not surface otherwise. Even when people are in a strong, committed
relationship, taking it long distance can be a difficult test to pass.
Whatever the reason for the distance, it helps if both people
understand it and agree that it is the best option. If one of them is resentful from the beginning, things
can go downhill fast. Both of your attitudes going into the arrangement can make the difference in whether
your long distance relationship is an adventure or a disaster.
Come to an agreement about phone calls right from the start. One
of you may have more commitments and a heavier workload than the other. If you can’t take the time to spend
on the phone every day without it getting in the way of work or sleep, you may get agitated over constant
calls and this might be interpreted as your not wanting to talk at all. If you are on the other end of the
situation, be understanding and don’t make a fuss.
Make the most of the time you do have. Sometimes things come up
that are unpleasant but necessary to deal with. Otherwise, try to talk about positive things. If you don’t
have time to fight, use it to advantage to make things even better! You should also keep in mind that the
other person may be trying to focus on work, school, whatever it is important enough for them to be separated
from you. Starting an argument over nothing can disrupt something important over something that didn’t even
bear mentioning.
Never, ever, try to make the other person jealous. It’s easy to
let your imagination roam in the wrong direction under these circumstances as it is. If you think it’s a good
time to let the other person know that there are other fish in the sea, think again. You may end up in a
situation you can’t control and can’t bring to a stop.
If it is possible with the distance that is between you, find a
meeting spot that is halfway between you. It may be possible to meet more often if you don’t have to cover as
much distance and this requires the same effort from each person instead of putting the responsibility of
travel on just one of you. Meetings can be filled with a lot of excitement that help you remember why you are
having this relationship in the first place!
